Abstract

Osman Hamdi Bey, who realized the firsts under the influence of his original and multifaceted personality in the period of Turkish culture and art history, attracted the attention of many researchers with his works. For this reason, Osman Hamdi Bey conducted many researches both in Turkey and abroad. Osman Hamdi Bey’s painting and design skills, intellectuality and reformist personality have led to Ottoman art and aesthetic perception. In this study, the ethnographic artifacts of Osman Hamdi Bey’s life, paintings and paintings were investigated. Ethnographic objects have been examined in order to understand the functions, symbolic languages and the functions of materials, techniques and compositions. Osman Hamdi Bey’s paintings have been done by photographing, charcoal sketching and oil painting on canvas. His paintings are influential in interiors, figurative, still life, landscape, portrait and janr. He is the first Turkish artist to use the female figure in figurative compositions. Osman Hamdi Bey made orientalist paintings and designed compositions in response to European orientalist artists. European orientalist artists have included oriental commodities in their interior paintings. Thus, they reinforced the eastern effect. However, from time to time, they used ethnographic works of different cultural regions in their paintings. Like other orientalist artists, he used ethnographic works. He placed traditional handicrafts samples which he had observed or photographed in different places according to the subject of the painting and placed them into the composition. Preferred ethnographic works are intended to be visual elements which they strengthen the effect of the interior design as well as the symbolic meaning to strengthen the message.
