Abstract

Education, in the most general sense, is the process of bringing the desired behaviours in individuals providing them with knowledge. Throughout the human history, it is seen that societies which place importance on education play pioneer role and ones neglect it remain in the background. For every state, it is education that enables them to utilise their human resource in the most productive way. It does not matter whether it is for religious, economic or judicial purposes. Societies having educated individuals are capable of creating institutions which are in advance of their time. After it was conquered by Muslims, Tulunids were the first dynasty to succeed in establishing a state in Egypt. It is seen that Ahmed, father of the state of Tulunids, spent the income, which should have been sent to Baghdad by taking advantage of weakness of Abbasid caliphate, in favour of the Egyptian public for increasing agricultural production and fixing irrigation canals that began to be destroyed. New steps followed these successful ones. Tulunid Ahmed built a grand city which rose to prominence with the name el-Katai and he patronised notable persons in intellectual and religious disciplines. Available archives explicitly show that economic life developed, activities of public works increased and there were significant improvements in scientific and intellectual field in Tulunids Era when compared to past. In this paper, it is aimed to present the factors affecting education, science and culture in Tulunids Era in Egypt and the consequences of these developments.
