Abstract

An earthquake occurred at 3:30 in the morning of 9 August 1912 in Şarköy and Mürefte, counties of Gallipoli District of Edirne Province. The earthquake was felt in Marmara Region, Princes’ Islands and Coastal Aegean region. The fire that started just after the earthquake caused an increase in the number of dead and wounded. The earthquakes and the fire resulted in over one thousand deaths and thousands of wounded as well as the destruction and damage of houses, shops, and official institutions. Apart from Muslims, the earthquake affected non-Muslims, especially Greeks. For this reason, the Greek Patriarchate worked hard to meet the needs of the earthquake victims. Immediately after the earthquake, local and central authorities tried to meet the needs of the earthquake victims in the areas of beverage, food, clothing, shelter, health and safety. Furthermore, the necessary funds were collected through the aid commissions established by both the official authorities and the public. There were also the top officials of the local and foreign state level among the supporters and fund raisers. In addition, some foreign states have sent medical committees for treatment of earthquake victims. This article discusses these aid activities.
