Abstract
Günlük yaşantımızın en önemli unsurlarından olan ulaşım, tarihin ilk dönemlerinden günümüze kadar insanlığın en önemli faaliyet alanlarından birini oluşturmuştur. Tekerleğin icadıyla başlayan ulaşım ve ulaştırma faaliyetleri uzun bir süreçte önemli değişim ve dönüşüm geçirerek günümüze kadar ulaşmıştır. Hayvanların çektiği ulaşım araçları, yerini önce buhar gücüyle çalışan araçlara daha sonra fosil yakıtıyla çalışan taşıtlara ve elektrikli ulaşım vasıtalarına bırakmıştır. Bu durum, ulaşımdaki değişim ve gelişimin nihai noktaya ulaştığı anlamına da gelmemektedir.
Ulaşım faaliyetlerinin amacı, kişiye ve topluma göre çeşitlilik gösterebilir. Ulaşım araçlarındaki önemli yapısal farklılıklarla birlikte, bunların çoğunlukla kent içi ulaşım ve toplu taşıma amacıyla kullanıldığı açıktır. Ulaşımdaki bu amacın gerçekleşmesi için özellikle yolcu taşımacılığı farklılaşıp taşımanın türleri çeşitlenmiş ve yeni ulaştırma seçenekleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Tramvaylar da bu seçeneklerden biridir; ulaşım tarihinde, kent içi toplu taşıma aracı olarak yerini almıştır. Dönemin ulaşım ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak için bu aracın Türkiye’de de kullanıldığı ve kullanılmaya devam edildiği bilinmektedir. Tramvay, öncelikle Türkiye’de özel işletmecilerce kullanılmış ve zamanla kurum ve statü değişikliğine uğramıştır. Tramvay Şirketi, 1939 yılında dönemin politikası doğrultusunda devletleştirilip İstanbul Belediyesi kuruluşu olan İstanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel İşletmeleri Umum Müdürlüğüne (İETT) bağlanmıştır. Günümüzde otobüs taşımacılığıyla rekabet edemediği için hizmetten kaldırılmıştır.
Tramvay, her ne kadar ülkemizde popülerliğini yitirse de onunla ilgili çalışmalar, onun Türkiye ulaşım tarihindeki yerini, işletmesindeki süreci, İstanbul’un günlük yaşamına etkilerini ortaya çıkaracaktır. Arşivden elde edilen belgelerle tramvayın Cumhuriyet Dönemi Türkiye’sindeki öyküsü ve ona dair bilinmeyenler bu çalışmada incelenmiştir. Bu çalışmada Tramvay Şirketinin işleyişi, yol güzergâhları, tarifeler, inşaat ve bakım çalışmaları ele alınmıştır.

Abstract
Transportation, which is one of the most important elements of our daily life, has been one of the most important fields of activity of humanity from the first periods of history to the present day. Transportation and transportation activities, which started with the invention of the wheel have reached the present day by the undergoing signifcant changes and transformations in a long period of time. The means of transportation pulled by animals gave way to steam powered vehicles, then fossil fuel vehicles and electric transportation vehicles. This does not mean that the change and development in transportation has reached that final point.
The purpose of transportation activities may vary according to the person and the society. With the important structural differences in the means of transport, it is clear that they are mostly used for urban transport and public transport. In order to realize this aim in transportation, especially pasenger transportation has differentiated, the types of transportation options have emerged. Trams are one of these options; in the history of transportation, it has taken its place as a means of urban public transportation. It is known that this vehicle was used and continued in Turkey to meet the transportation needs of the period. Tramvay was primarily used by private operators in Turkey and has undergone a change institution and status over time. The Tramvay Company was nationalized in 1939 in line with the policy of the period and was affiliated to the Istanbul Electricty Tramvay and Tunel Operations General Directorate (İETT), an organization of the İstanbul Municipality. Today, it has been removed from service as it cannot compete with bus transportation.
Although the tram has lost its popularity in our country, it will be important in terms of its place in the history of Turkey, the process in its operation, its effects on İstanbul’s daily life, as well as the histroy of transportationin Turkey. With the documents obtained from the archive, the story of the tram in Turkey in Republican period and the unknowns about it were tried to examined in this study.This operation process, especially the operaiton of the Tram Company, road routes, traffis, construction and maintenance Works have been discussed.
