Abstract

Abstract

As a result of the fall of the Roman Empire, two states, western and Eastern Rome, started to appear in the political scene as the heir of this state. The Byzantine Empire, the second one of these states, accepted Christianity as the official religion of the state as a result of the efforts of Constantine. However, in the last periods of the Roman Empire; the stagnation and regression that emerged in all areas of the state and social life continued at full speed in both part of the Roman-based west and the Eastern-based Istanbul. Because of this period (Early Byzantine period), the Orthodox Church, the representative of the religious organization that influenced all areas of political, economic, social and cultural life, put all mental and transplant sciences and scientists working in these fields under heavy pressure. In the meantime, physicians and pharmacologists working in the fields of medicine and pharmacy, who were at the head of the aforementioned sciences, had also been affected by the pressures of this heavy control mechanism. Therefore, when Early Byzantine Pharmacology is examined thoroughly, it is seen that the physicians operating in this field were some kind of imitators or compliers of savings of physicians and pharmacologists such as Hippocrates, Galenos, and Dioscoride, who gained fame in ancient medicine and pharmacy sciences. Here, it is possible to mention Oribasius, Aetius of Diyarbakır, Alexander of Aydın and Paulus of Aeginal as the representatives or carriers of the Ancient Age Pharmacology heritage that came to the fore in the Early Byzantine period.

This study includes an evaluation of John Scarbocough’s findings on the subject, as well as information about the science of pharmacology, lives and workings of the pharmacologists in this field in the Early Byzantine period.
