Abstract

Nusaybin is one of the most important cities in the region of Al Jazeera in the Middle Ages. Its importance came from its geographical and strategical structure. Because it is found in a point where the civilizations converge. As it is known, in the early middle ages the Sasanians in the east, Byzantine Empire in the West were actively engaged with themselves in the politica area. Therefore, a very arduous rivalry for hegemony and dominance continued between these two superpowers in the Near East. During this rivalry, Nusaybin, because of its geographical situation, was exposed to pay the heavy price for it by passing in other hands. The most second factor is that it is found on the Silk Road, so that it was a brisk trade center. The trading goods coming from the West and the East were exchanged here and that city was overflowing with traders coming from various countries in every season of the year. The third factor that makes it important is that it is a center of Nestorian Church, owing to many Nestorian Christians being here. For this religious feature, the city had atracted the Sasanians’ attention, wheras the Byzantine had born hostility against it.
