Abstract

The Black Sea was one of the well-known regions of the old continent since the early ages. However, an apparent and accurate analysis was not made about the Black Sea in the early ages and in most of the middle ages. As we go in back in time, it was observed that the amount of information about this great sea decreased, getting unclear and partly it was mixed with legends. At these time, although the black sea was known, mostly nameless, mysterious and fearful. In time, more accurate observation can be made by placing information about the Black sea. many travellers and Geographers were contributed to the increase of the accumulation of knowledge that was finally begin to form. Between 10 and 15. centuries, travellers and geographers have revealed many works which transferred the knowledge about various parts of the world. Different factors such as maritime activities, embassy duties, trade, and politics played an effective role in the creation of these works. Although not all travelers and geographers transferred information about the black sea, some of them went to the black sea personally and provided various data about cities that they were located in. In works that prepared by itinerants and geographers of the period in qestion, firstly, from the Bosphorus to the east direction, the regions and cities that have coasts to the Black Sea in the northwest and northeast of Anatolia were discussed, while compiling the information on the Southern and Eastern regions of the Black Sea. Afterwards, evaluated the information is about the area that has an eastern coast to the black sea, also cities which have transferred data, neighbouring and other related cities and regions such as the Caucasus.
