Abstract

Legends are the synthesis of the experiences and dreams of a society. Without exception every society has its peculiar legends. Thus, it wouldnt be odd to define legends as the maginary world of a society. In this imaginary world, it is possible to perceive the joys, sorrows, fears, hopes and apprehensions of that society. Legends comprise various types of living beings; such as a sphinx the body of a lion and the head of a human which is associated with Egyptian culture or the Greek God “Pan” which is a part of the Anatolian culture, is formed as half man and half goat. Examples can be multiplified in this case. It is generally thought that these beings are mostly adorned with supernatural powers and they are described as God, servant to a God, physical form of a God or the mount of the God. It is significant not to overlook the half man half animal figure “The Garu?a” which exists both in Indian and Chinese mythologies. One of the outstanding works in Indian mythology “The Garu?a Purana” and another well known work in Chinese mythology “The Shan Hai Jing” both introduce a similar mythological figure. Thus, the goal of this research is to explore “The Garu?a” pattern that is seen in two different cultures located in two separate geographical locations and to introduce the common features of this figure.
