Abstract

The need for transportation and communication has been important throughout the history of mankind, and this need has been tried to be met by various means within the conditions of the period. Mankind’s desire and effort to live in a better living conditions have brought new developments in transportation and communication and as a result of experience and knowledge gained in this process have provided facilities in transportation and communication among people. The Ottoman Empire holding the control of a very large geographical area made an effort to ensure that civil and military shipments could be carried out in a comfortable and peaceful way and that the necessary information or documents could be delivered on time, both in Anatolia and in the Rumeli. In order to continue this process without delay, the Ottoman Empire achieved this through some institutions and organizations that it put into service. In our study, the development of the studies carried out in the fields of transportation and communication in the Ottoman State and its transformation in the historical process will be discussed on the one hand and on the other hand, how important are the land, sea and railways under the control of the Ottoman Empire which was spread to Africa, Asia and Europe and the communication networks established for the continuation of the empire will be emphasized.
