Abstract

In Russia economic, cultural and social changes were observed as a result of the serfdom abolition declared by Tsar Alexandr II in 1861. When serfdom, which was an obstacle for development of industry, was abolished, merchants got richer and nobles, who had been owners of the serfs, started to lose their power. Russian playwright Alexandr Nikolayevich Ostrovsky, who observed the Russian society, revealed the social changes of the various social classes in his plays. The aim of the paper is to reveal the state of merchants and nobles, changed socioculturally after the emancipation reform, by analyzing Ostrovsky’s characters.
