Abstract

Following period of conquest of Anatolia by the Turks, Aksaray just like other Anatolian cities gained a new appearance and identity. Seljuk sultan, Kilij Arslan II(1155-1192) who was a political genius and the founder of Aksaray had the city as famous as never seen again after 1170. Kilic Arslan built new palace with white stones for himself and city was named after this palace. In addition, he built buildings for his soldiers and other buildings peculiar to Islamic civilization such as mosques, masjids, madrasah, ribat. In fact, Aksaray became a Turkish-Islamic city in this period. Kilic Arslan was resided here and he was prepared for military campaigns here. That is why the city took these names: Darü’l-Cihad, Darü’z-Zafer or Darü’r-Ribat.
